I’m Jillian and I am incredibly excited you’ve downloaded my 3 Beginners Steps to Christ- Centered Body Positivity.
I have always struggled with my weight and my body image but things really got serious for me when I found myself practicing bulimia in order to continue a weight loss commitment I had made to myself.
I have not only been bulimic but I have been a chronic dieter, a body shamer, a self-loather, and a woman lost in the battle over my self-worth and beauty.
Everything changed for me when I had started ANOTHER diet and found myself literally having no more energy to fight anymore for the fantasy me I so desperately wanted to become.
I decided that my happiness and mental health was more important than a number on the scale. This decision was incredibly impactful for me because God used it to open a door into real freedom.
I realized how I had been listening to the wrong father. (We’ll talk about this in Step 2.)
I realized I’d been lied to, manipulated, brain washed, and captured as a prisoner of a spiritual but very real war.
In this small guide I hope to encourage you with Biblical truth and my journey’s experience to help you begin your own journey to Christ-centered body positivity.
So much of our purpose is tied into how we see ourselves and how we believe the world sees us.
Body image is not just a topic for the world to handle. Christians should be talking about this as well. In fact, I could argue that TRUE body positivity IS a Christian thing. God is the Creator of all bodies and we are made in His image.
Since satan has waged war on our physical beauty, our food, and our bodies…well, I’m the Christian woman who is standing on the battlefield, sword in hand, and asking you to fight back!!!
I’ve probably watched Lord of the Rings too many times but I see this battle as my purpose. Like when Aragorn looks back and says “For Frodo!’ and takes off running first.
I see myself sprinting out against the enemy with my army of sisters and brothers right behind me.
We are running into battle. We are taking true beauty and body positivity back and claiming it for JESUS CHRIST!
Acknowledge Absolute Truth.
The battle over your body, beauty, and soul began all the way back in Genesis.
Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our IMAGE, according to our LIKENESS. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
We are made in the very image of God.
I hope you haven’t become so used to hearing this that it just falls on deaf ears.
YOU. (insert your name)
YOU WERE MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE AND IN HIS LIKENESS.
You are not a mistake, you are not trash, you are not ugly, you are not less than, you are not worthless, you are not a regret, and you are not without major purpose.
Being made in God’s image/likeness, lets just acknowledge who the Bible says God is.
God is Faithful – 1 Corinthians 10:13 God is Light – 1 John 1:5
God is Patient – 2 Peter 3:9 God is Creative – Genesis 1:1 God does Not Change – James 1:17 God is Love – John 3:16
God is Caring – Matthew 6:26 God is Truth – Numbers 23:19 God is Flawless – Psalm 18:30 God is Just – Psalm 50:6
God is Compassionate – Psalm 116:5
God bears Our Burdens – Psalm 68:19-20 God is a Sun and Shield – Psalm 84:11-12 God is a Strength Giver – 2 Samuel 22:32-34 God is VICTORIOUS – Deuteronomy 20:1-4
I could go on.
In Genesis, Eve is met by satan.
Somewhere between God looking at Creation and saying it is all good in chapter 1 to chapter 3 where satan is approaching Eve for the first time (that we know of) satan had fallen from Heaven.
So chapter 3 is when you are now being introduced to your life’s enemy: Satan. Are you the kind of believer and Christian who may not take satan seriously?
Do you go through your life blaming luck and karma on the bad things that happen to you?
Trust me friend he is real and he hates you. This is part of Step 1.
Satan is your literal and very real enemy.
He is the villain and he is absolutely 100%, without a doubt, after your soul.
One of the easiest ways he disarms you in this great Spiritual Battle for souls is by manipulating you into believing that you’re not worthy.
Our physical bodies are a HUGE part of this.
When we feel ugly and fat and gross and less than someone else, we are more likely to stay inside. We’re likely to focus on ourself and not others. We are likely to obsess over how we can change our appearance. We consume ourselves with thoughts of being better than others by being smaller, more fit, prettier, and envied.
Let’s get real.
Don’t you enjoy being the prettiest girl in the room?
We diet. We undergo surgeries. We starve. We binge. We vomit. We compare. We hurt ourselves in the name of Health and Beauty.
Isn’t it ironic that the first lie that satan told Eve (the woman) had to do with food and her body?
He told her she wouldn’t die if she took the fruit and after speaking to satan Eve saw that the fruit was pleasing to the eye and she gave in.
Satan is good.
He is really good at what he does.
And what he does is lie.
He is a MASTER at twisting what is true.
This is the truth that you must acknowledge if you want to find freedom with your
Sweet sister, you were created in the Lord’s image and for His great purpose.
God is everything beautiful and lovely.
You are His child.
Where we’ve gone wrong is we’ve listened to satan’s tools and followers that have convinced us that to be beautiful you must look a certain way and be a certain size.
No where in the Bible is there a standard for body type and beauty.
Actually the Bible says that God doesn’t look at appearance. That’s a human thing. He looks at the heart.
Satan is the prince of this world. It’s his playground and he controls the big players.
Hollywood, the media, magazines, movies, tv…He has his hand in all of it.
If he can convince you that you’re not even worthy to be SEEN then he knows he doesn’t have to really worry about you going out into the world to interact, serve, and love on other people in Christ’s name.
When we’re too ashamed and afraid to even wear shorts outside or a bathing suit to the pool, it’s not very likely we’re going to be bold and go storm the world for Jesus.
How many times have you put a dream or something you really wanted to do on hold because you’re waiting to lose weight and be that perfect size!?
I’m guilty of it.
My husband and I still haven’t been on that cruise because we always wanted to be skinnier when we went. How sad.
The truth that satan is after your confidence must be acknowledged as factual.
The fact that your beauty and worth are not defined by a society’s opinion must be acknowledged as truth.
The truth that God made you on purpose and for a purpose needs to be believed as
your starting point for all things body positive.
The truth that God is not interested in your looks needs to be felt, understood, and believed.
In the big picture, your looks are not important. Period. Your looks are not what will get you into Heaven.
Your looks will not save you from sin.
Your looks will not open salvation’s door.
Your looks will not bring someone to truly know and love Jesus.
Your looks will not be what saves you.
If you can start with the Word, the TRUTH, and truly believe it you are on your way to Christ-centered body positivity and freedom.
Genesis is our starting place for the journey. Acknowledge the TRUTH.
CONFRONT YOUR INSECURITIES.
Alright warrior. You’ve got your belt of truth on and it’s time to confront the enemy and his weapons.
Let’s talk about these labels and physical insecurities that you’ve been carrying around and hurting over.
Butter Face. (everything is pretty but-her-face) Obese.
Fat Thighs. Cellulite. Fat Rolls. Double Chins. Too Skinny. Thin Hair. Gray Hair. Wrinkles. Acne. Moles. Freckles. Too Pale. Too Dark.
That list can go on and on and on and on and on…
Let me ask you a Question while you think about the words that plague you, that make you cry, that you’d LOVE to change and fix.
Who told you that those features, your size, your looks, your weight, your body, your face, your hair were bad things to have?
Who told you that your insecurities were something to be insecure about?
Where did you get that knowledge from? Someone or some thing had to put those beliefs in your head.
For me, a BIG insecurity I’ve had for years is my (big) nose. It looks like a witch nose and I have definitely thought about getting a nose job. Spending money, going into surgery, and undergoing pain in order to fix something that is not broken.
Where did I learn that a bigger nose was bad to have? That it is a problem? That is possibly holds me back from success and the nicer things in life? Because if I had a smaller button type nose then I’d be more attractive and be able to have doors open for me that less attractive people couldn’t get into.
TV. MOVIES. MAGAZINES. MEDIA.
The same people who photoshop women constantly, which is deception. They lie all the time.
Think about it.
Where did you learn that your insecurities were something to be insecure about in
the first place?
The same society that mocks Christ, hates His Word, and wants to shut down/
silence His followers.
THAT is who we’re choosing to believe when we live in insecurity.
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. -Luke 4:5-6
Prince of this world. Father of lies.
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” – John 8
We’re listening to the wrong father when we believe our features, our size, our weight, and our looks are things to fix, are things that are broken, are things that are wrong, and are things that are less than.
We need to confront them and call them LIES.
You are lovely.
You are beautiful.
You are more than a body and an appearance. You are a soul.
You are a creation.
You are desired.
You are loved.
You are worth dying for. (and Jesus did) You are worth returning for. (and Jesus us) You are captivating.
You are spirited.
You are gifted.
You are unique.
You are cherished.
You are chosen.
The real Father is the Lord and He would never shame you for looking different than someone else.
He would never call you ugly and worthless.
We’ve been listening to the wrong father and it’s time to call satan what he is: a liar. Step 2 is looking in the mirror and seeing the truth.
Look at your body.
Really look at it in the mirror.
See your hands, your feet, your eyes, your mouth, your stomach, your legs, your chest, your back, your hair, your neck….
EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS ON PURPOSE AND IS NOT FLAWED BY FAT OR DEFORMITY.
You do not need to be thinner or more curvy to be valued.
The world may reject you but guess what sweet sister they rejected Jesus first. Jesus could have come to earth as a handsome man but He didn’t. Isaiah 53 says that he didn’t have any looks that we would be attracted to him
The beauty standards of men mattered little to Jesus and He did not need good looks to fulfill the mightiest purpose ever, to capture hearts, and to change millions of lives.
Confront your insecurities. Call them what they are. Lies.
Once you believe truth and you’ve confronted the lies…now it’s time to ACT. This is when it can feel the scariest.
This where you put on your spiritual armor and you run towards the enemy with your sword drawn.
This is where you take your beauty back.
What have you been waiting to do while you’ve been obsessing over the weight you want to lose or maybe even the weight you want to gain?
What do you fantasize about doing with your life once you feel like you’re pretty enough to do it?
I have heard more than one woman in my life say that she can’t be a public speaker or lead a small group until she loses her weight because she doesn’t want to be judged AND she doesn’t feel confident enough in her appearance to face a room of other women.
Forget feeling confident in her knowledge of God’s Word and mission… She doesn’t feel confident in satan’s standards of physical appearance!
And that’s enough to stop her from delivering God’s Word and being used by God in this world.
It can sound harsh but I want you to let these truths sink in. This is so many of our realities.
And I have been there.
I have thought these same things and even admitted them to a few trusted friends.
To the worlds standards I have absolutely no business encouraging women about body image.
I am over 200 lbs and not the prettiest girl by far.
I should be silent and be spending my time working out and trying harder to fit in and change my appearance.
And wouldn’t satan just love it if I believed that and lived that out in my life. But I decided to fight back.
My beauty doesn’t belong to the world. It belongs to Jesus. It IS Jesus.
The world may never see it by looking at my body but they will see it with how I live my life.
Step 3 is taking your life back friends.
It’s getting out there and not allowing any of those insecurities to hold you back anymore!!!!
Not as God’s disciple, not as a wife, a student, a mother, a friend, a missionary, in your career, in your hobbies, in your passions….
Step 3 is the brave steps you must take.
But you wont be doing it alone….
When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. 2 When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. 3 He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. 4 For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” -Deuteronomy 20:1-4
The world may call you names. They may bully you. They may target you. They may hate you for being out there and shining brightly. But do not be afraid of them.
You may get teased.
You may be left out.
You may have passive aggressive comments made to you. You may be abused.
Do not be afraid.
This is how to have Christ-centered body positivity.
Your body is meant to do BIG things for God and using it to do just that is how you’ll be freed from insecurities and enter into a life of freedom.
Every day this will all become easier and trust me, discipline is a huge factor in this.
It’s taking these steps and truths every day and making a conscious effort to live them out.
Once you do you’ll be able to enjoy the more girly things without them being idols or definers in your life. Make-up wont be MUST-HAVES…it’ll be LIKES-TO- HAVE.
Physical beauty will just be a small part of who you ARE (and not about what you’re lacking) and it can serve as a way to express your personality and creativity. This can all bring glory back to Jesus.
Remember, being physically beautiful is NOT a bad thing. I LOVE make-up and I do feel my best when I have mascara and lipstick on. Any physical beauty I possess is just a reflection of my Creator and His beautiful work of art.
I am so excited for you to take the journey from living in Insecurity to living in Freedom!!!
