When Chronic Illness Strikes

Just a warning, this isn’t the most attractive of posts.

I’m sharing a possible TMI situation but I know a lot of women suffer from chronic illnesses and mine directly affects the foods I choose to eat.

I have something called Interstitial Cystitis.

It’s commonly known as painful bladder syndrome.

Women have pain ranges from mild to so severe that they have their bladders removed and some are even forced to live their lives in bed and in a wheel chair.

My personal symptoms are frequent urination and burning.

It has affected so much of my life.

Last year I had to stop drinking all soda and also caffeinated coffee. It took me 7 months to completely kick the habit. It was very hard and still hard.

The intimacy in my marriage has had to change because sex is definitely a trigger for flare ups. My husband and I have had to take extra care because of this.

And now to help manage my symptoms I am embarking on a huge diet change because the food you eat can make your IC symptoms worse.

There is no cure for IC and it can continue to get worse as you age. All I can do is do my best to manage my symptoms and live my life to the best of my ability.

So, I want to say goodbye to a lot of my favorite foods. haha. It doesn’t mean I can never have them again. You can actually reintroduce certain foods back in slowly but for now I have to be pretty strict with my food choices. I don’t want pain and the hardships of having frequent urination. To help you understand… it feels like a constant UTI. Some days are worse than others.

So, what is the IC diet?

By the way “diet” makes me uncomfortable. lol. I definitely need to get over it.

So much of helping IC is about healing your gut. A lot of women have shared that getting off of gluten has helped them so much.

I am going to have to follow more of a paleo type lifestyle.

I’m taking this slow. I don’t want this to become a burden or a stress in my life. It’s supposed to help take away pain and not cause more to it.

I wanted to share this with you because it is such a big part of my health journey and life.

I’m not concerned AT ALL about how this is going to have an effect on my weight. I just want to feel better and be healthy.

Wish me luck!
